The Bait And Switch President

By The Reverend Published: February 24, 2017

There's nothing quite as nauseating as listening to a big mouth, lucky sperm club member who probably hasn't actually WORKED one day of his life....a man who boasted about how smart he was to be able to game the system so he didn't have to pay taxes for some 20 years....tell his neo-nazi followers this today....

"It's time for all Americans to get off of welfare and get back to work, you're going to love it, you're going to love it, you're going to love it."

This is a variation of Paul Ryan's "hammock dwellers" and Mitt's "47%". It reflects the mindset of "principled conservatives" who detest the existence of government assistance. This notion is also a corollary to the bitter hatred of Obamacare. THEIR tax dollars partially going to fund subsidies for poorer and lower middle class working American families really pisses principled conservatives off.

But..of's all built on a myth....

It's All Very Depressing

By The Reverend Published: February 24, 2017

Nuclear weapons expansion, pursuing recreational weed users in states where weed has been decriminalized, going all in on for-profit, privately-owned prisons, ICE incursions into sanctuary cities, the necessity of a new underground railroad in 2017, an effort to obstruct justice, the president's personal lawyer meeting with convicted felons and a mobbed-up character for the purpose of assisting Vlad Putin's agenda,  letting states decide how best to discriminate against transgenders, and all capped off this week by Trump's address to the neo-nazis and culture-warrior freaks this morning at the CPAC gathering.

This week has been extremely discouraging. Trump's new fascism is beginning to take shape and it's even more depressing than I anticipated.

The Reuters news service conducted an interview with America's so-called president. Behold the argle-bargle....

“It could lead to a lot more jobs in the United States. ... I certainly support a form of tax on the border because everybody else does. We’re the only country, we’re one of the very few countries, possibly the only country, that has no border tax. And that’s not a tax to the consumer, because that’s going to be a tax to companies and it’s going to be a tax to other countries much more so than it is to the consumer. That’s a tax to other countries. And what will happen is, don’t forget there is no tax if we make our product in the United States. So I don’t consider it a tax. That’s a tax if companies are buying their product outside of the United States. But ... if they make their product in the United States, there is no tax. So what is going to happen is companies are going to come back here, they’re going to build their factories and they’re going to create a lot of jobs and there’s no tax.”

Fascism 101: Criminalize Dissent

By The Reverend Published: February 23, 2017

Protests against the man who sits in the Oval Office are starting to wear on Republicans and the Trump administration. They don't like them. They especially do not like the raucous behavior of constituents at so-called townhall meetings...where mostly Republican representatives have been getting the what-for from anti-Trump locals.

To fight back, Republicans and the Trump administration have been claiming that the protests are chock full of "paid protesters", "professional protesters", trucked or bussed in for the sole purpose of "agitating." Of course there's no evidence to support such fanciful accusations....but we're dealing with a fact-free Republican-controlled federal government evidence and proof are not required.

Here are two examples from many....

Republican congressman Jason Chaffetz is now claiming that the crowd of participants who confronted him at a town hall in his Utah district on Thursday night included a large contingent of paid agitators from out of state.

How Can We Defend Ourselves Against Robo-Criminals?

By The Reverend Published: February 22, 2017

One must fully understand that writers at the National Review are principled conservatives. Educated, intelligent, and not prone to least not like normally heard from Rush, Sean, and their ilk. Why, the author of the two paragraphs below, David French, is so Serious and Principled and Smart, Bill Kristol made a point of naming him as a potential #neverTrumper candidate to go up against Donald and the Hildabeast.

David French didn't appreciate the 4th Circuit's ruling upholding Maryland's ban on AR-15's and similar weapons. I mean, French really didn't like the ruling. He's a Serious man, you see, not prone to hysterical thinking. Read how Serious....

This court has determined that your right to self-defense is limited to the use of weapons less effective than those used in the most notorious massacres. In other words, criminals define your rights. Whatever gun they choose to use in the rarest of crimes, you’re going to have to settle for less, even if the criminal retains broad and easy access to superior firepower. After all, the Fourth Circuit, in its infinite gun wisdom, has determined that no one has “needed to fire more than ten rounds” to protect himself.

Here’s the bottom line, citizens of Maryland: A federal court has defied the Supreme Court and decided that the constitutional right to keep and bear arms is limited to those guns that have no modern military analog and have not (yet) been used to carry out a mass shooting. So dust off those pearl-handled revolvers. Learn to shoot like Doc Holliday. Criminals won’t comply with Maryland’s brainless law, so your aim had better beat their firepower.

Wednesday's MAGA Report

By The Reverend Published: February 22, 2017

(Norway) has just been ranked the best democracy in the world for the sixth year running by the Economist Intelligence Unit, a London-based consultancy.

The report also downgraded the United States from a "full democracy" to a "flawed democracy" — placing it alongside countries such as India, Argentina and Colombia.

The demotion was linked to American voters losing trust in their own political institutions and the role of big-money lobbying.

Shout it from the rooftops....USA, USA, USA

The American Purge To Preserve White Supremacy

By The Reverend Published: February 21, 2017

Good overview here of the immigration memo issued today by HHS Sec. John Kelly. No guidelines yet on how, or if, state National Guards will be actively involved in what looks like, no matter what the White House says, a plan for mass deportation. Not mass deportation as in a massive number of undocumenteds rounded up and removed in a day, or a week, or even a month....but mass numbers of deportation over time. The one positive sign is that it appears as if Trump will, for now, not try to round up the Dreamers....and kick them out too.

This stood out to me as particularly vile...see what you think... suggests that “parents and family members of these children” who are immigrants in the US, who often pay smugglers to ensure their children make it safely north, should be considered accomplices to human smuggling and trafficking. It recommends that legal immigrants who pay for their children to come to the US be referred for criminal prosecution — and that unauthorized immigrants who do the same be deported.

Sounds a bit similar to going after the wives and children of jihadists, doesn't it?

Trump's Biggest Con Ever

By The Reverend Published: February 21, 2017

I use The Reverend as a moniker because some 30-something years ago I used to be a preacher of the evangelical kind. Yes, I know that seems hard to believe now, but it's true. Evangelical Christians believe in the spoken Word. For the uninitiated, whereas the Catholic faith believes god's saving grace comes via their ritualistic sacraments, evangelical Christians believe that god's saving grace is transmitted to sinful humans through the preached, or spoken Word.

Romans 1:16....For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes

Evangelicals interpret that verse just as mystically as Catholics interpret their sacraments. Evangelicals believe that when the story of Jesus is spoken, his alleged saving of humanity in his life, death and resurrection, the "power" of god is present in a way that it is not normally present. And that "power" leads listeners to believe the story and become personally "saved."

Here's the pertinent part for this post. "Saved" evangelicals, those who have experienced the power of god in the spoken gospel....return to church week after week, to re-hear the spoken Word, in order to continue to "feel" the "power" allegedly contained in that spoken Word. Point being that regular evangelical church attendees come to church already believing in what the preacher will, again and again, preach.

Which Would Be Worse?

By The Reverend Published: February 20, 2017

Although I would disagree with life-long conservative John Podhoretz on, well, just about any policy he has written something I have been giving some thought to...

...if Democrats try to please their Trump-hating constituents by screaming impeachment and liberal media tries to garner audience by jumping openly and vociferously on the bandwagon, the Trumpians will respond in kind by stirring the pot through their media and their argumentation.

The result might well be violence. Not rhetorical violence. Actual violence. Actual political violence. Actual conflicts between anti-Trumpers and Trumpers. At demonstrations. In the streets. Of our cities. Political violence of a sort we haven’t seen in 50 years, and maybe haven’t really seen in this country in the modern era. Those who believe Trump is a unique menace whose threat to our democratic way of life will be met with those who believe the elites are using illicit means to oust the legitimately elected president of the United States.

This is not a fantasy. This is one possible future. And every rational person who cares about the future of the country should be mindful of it, and should work to forestall it.

Desperate Donald

By The Reverend Published: February 19, 2017

Four months after the GOP nominee in the 2016 presidential contest won the Electoral College vote, and only one month after being sworn in as the nation's 45th president, Donald Trump held a campaign rally in Melbourne, Florida yesterday. A campaign rally. A sitting president held a campaign rally four weeks into his presidency.

I watched the entire...event....and have a few observations.

Before Trump and Melania made their grand entrance down the stairs of Air Force One and made their way to the podium....several Republican officials made short rah-rah statements in support of the Donald. The sheriff of Brevard County informed the excited audience that the one and only responsibility of the federal government is to protect its citizens with the military and the police. That was new to me, having read the Constitution. Another House Rep, forgetful that Trump has already been elected, called Donald "the next president" of the U.S. One U.S. House Rep. stated that "unborn lives matter". Another said that Americans are already enjoying "new freedoms" under Trump, pointing to the surge in the stock market indexes as evidence...and hey, Fidel is dead...yay...USA, USA.

There were two prayers offered up. One by a black preacher who invoked the name of Jesus...and one very odd prayer, the Lord's Prayer, offered up by Mrs. Trump. Weird. Clumsy.

Confusion & Chaos As Political Strategy

By The Reverend Published: February 18, 2017

The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!

Despite the AP’s public release of the document, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said there was “no effort at all to utilize the National Guard to round up unauthorized immigrants.”

"no effort at all"....keep that in mind as we proceed.

On January 25th, Trump's Homeland Security Director, General John Kelly issued "implementation" guidelines for Donald's executive order dealing with immigration.
