Akron council recognizes young 'heroes'

Akron City Council recognized three "heroes" this week.

Council passed a resolution honoring Kameron Williams, Kaila Watkins and Phil Watkins for attempting to rescue Nic Shaffer July 11 from the swollen Mud Brook creek in the Merriman Valley. Shaffer, 12, was found dead three days later.

Councilman Russel Neal, Jr. said he was overcome with emotion when he read about the youths' attempts to save Nic. He said he doesn't know if he would have had the courage to jump into the normally calm creek that was 5-feet deep because of the recent storm.

"You unselfishly risked your lives to save life," Neal said. "We are very, very proud."

Council President Garry Moneypenny told the trio that their actions qualify them to be called heroes.

When Moneypenny called for the vote on the resolution, several people from the audience yelled, "Aye!" joining the affirmative votes of the 13 council members.

"I think that was more than 13," Moneypenny said.
