Akron fire union has new president

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: April 16, 2014

The Akron fire union has a new president.

Jim Knafel is out and Russ Brode, a vice president with Local 330, is in. The votes were counted Tuesday night, giving Brode the edge over Knafel.

"I see we have issues and I felt we should be working through them in a different way," said Brode, a firefighter for 22 years and a vice president for five years.

Brode said the fire department has numerous issues, both big and small. He said his top priority will be working with the administration on the need to for promotions.

Brode said he'd also like to try to make the union and the department more visible in the community.

The fire union has 307 members and will soon gain 43 more when a rookie class finishes its training.
