Akron mayor talks jobs, taxes and advice for next governor in think-tank interview

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: March 13, 2014

Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic talks taxes and schools and gives his advice for the next Ohio governor in an interview with a Cleveland-based think tank.

"Governor, whoever you are, look at what it is that young people need to get a job in the future, and match up those resources in the most efficient and effective way you can to carry that out," Plusquellic advises the next governor in the interview with Center for Community Solutions.

Plusquellic also discusses the unique challenges to teaching in an urban district.

"Compare an inner-city teacher in Cleveland or Akron or Columbus, and (if) you honestly can sit and tell me that you think that the kindergarten teacher in Hudson or Bexley is working as hard as the kindergarten teacher in Akron, than you haven't lived on this planet for awhile," he said. "That will define you as a great governor."

Plusquellic is featured this week in the center's Web-segment called "High on Ohio," which consists of interviews with prominent people in Ohio. Gene Krebs, a senior fellow with the center and former state representative, does the interviews.

The center's website has a 5-minute snippet of Plusquellic's interview and the full hour-long discussion.
