By admin Published: February 22, 2011

Beacon Journal staff report

Attorney John Fickes is seeking the Democratic appointment to the Summit County Council seat vacated by Jon Poda.

Fickes, 55, of Akron is a partner at the law firm Brouse McDowell. His practice focuses on civil litigation.

He currently is chairman of the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority board, and has previously served on boards for the Humane Society of Greater Akron, Summit County Community Partnership, Akron Area Volunteer Center, Friends of Hower House and Loyla of the Lakes Jesuit Retreat House.

He ran two unsuccessful campaigns for countywide office — for Common Pleas judge in 2008 and County Council in 1998.

Poda resigned his council seat to accept a job as deputy director of weights and measures with the county Fiscal Office. He also resigned from his job as a field representative for the Ohio Lottery Commission.

The Democratic Party will appoint Poda's successor. The party has scheduled a special meeting for 7 p.m. March 3 at North High School to select Poda's replacement.
