Beacon Journal bringing back local editorial cartoons

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: February 4, 2014

The editorial page in Monday's Beacon Journal included a feature that's been missing for several years: a local political cartoon.

The cartoon showed Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic holding a letter to Akron citizens and saying, "Of course I would love to sit down and clear the air about this unfortunate incident." The mayor, though, is shown fanning the flames of a fire underneath a chair beside him, with copies of his letter smoldering in the blaze.

The cartoon is a reference to Plusquellic's decison to write a letter to citizens in response to an assertion by some in the public that a shoving match between he and Councilman Russel Neal, Jr. in mid-December was racially motivated. (Plusquellic is white while Neal is black.)

Beacon Journal Editorial Editor Michael Douglas said Brian Shellito, an artist for the newspaper, will be penning local editorial cartoons about once a week. The newspaper has been without a local editorial cartoonist since artist Chip Bok left the paper several years ago.

Douglas said he is hopes to have the cartoons available on, as well as in the newspaper.
