CANTON: Longtime city Councilman Bill Smuckler announced Monday he will run for mayor in 2011.

Smuckler, a Democrat, is expected to challenge Mayor William J. Healy II in the primary in May. It would be the second time the two have run against each other for the mayor's seat.

In 2003, Smuckler defeated Healy in the primary before losing the general election to Republican Janet Weir Creighton.

Healy defeated Creighton for the seat in the 2007 election.

Smuckler, who regained an at-large seat in 2006, has served in various Canton City Council seats since he was first elected to office in 1983. He currently holds an at-large position, which he won in 1999.

Smuckler, a graduate of Bowling Green State University, is co-owner of Canton Hotel and Restaurant Supply.

His council term ends Dec. 31, 2011.
