Comunale running for Ohio House, will compete with Emilia Sykes

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: January 23, 2014

Emilia Sykes will have to fight to keep the seat her mother and father have long held in the Ohio House of Representatives.

Summit County Councilman Frank Comunale announced this morning that he will run for the 34th House District. This sets up a Democratic primary between the duo with politically well-known names.

"It has been an absolute honor to serve our community on county council, and I pledge to continue to provide our neighborhoods with the same responsive enthusiasm as our next state representative," Comunale, a county council member for eight years, said in a press release.

Comunale had been rumored to be considering a bid for the Statehouse for months.

Sykes, 27, who works for Summit County, announced in September that she planned to run for her father, Vernon Sykes', seat. Vernon Sykes can't run again because of term limits. He and his wife, Barbara, have held this seat for the past 30 years.

The filing deadline for the May 6 primary is Feb. 5.
