Ed FitzGerald getting support of Akron unions; firefighters to have event Tuesday

Ed FitzGerald, the Democratic candidate for governor, is feeling the love from Akron unions.

FitzGerald, the Cuyahoga County executive, spoke at an United Auto Workers hall in February as his counter to Gov. John Kasich's State of the State speech in nearby Medina. He had a fundraiser at the United Steelworkers last week after speaking at the Akron Press Club. And, the Akron fire union plans to have a Dogs and Suds Meet and Greet with FitzGerald next week.

The event at Akron Fire Fighters Local 330 will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the union hall, 161 Massillon Road. Those who attend can meet FitzGerald and other candidates for state and local office. The event is free and open to the public.

Updated: Akron surveying residents on what services they most value

What's more important to you: filling chuckholes or cutting high grass?

The city of Akron wants to hear your thoughts on which services are most important. The city is in the process of surveying residents at community meetings, with plans to tally the final results to help guide officials on the top priorities going forward.

Residents have completed surveys at several community meetings, with more planned in the next month. Here are the meetings scheduled for next week:

* Patterson Park Seniors: 1 p.m. Monday at Patterson Park Community Center, 800 Patterson Ave.

Local elected officials to hold tour to urge restoration of local government funding

Local elected officials will hold a two-day, six-city Stop the Local Government Fund Raid Tour that will include a stop in Akron.

The tour is visiting Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo, Cleveland, Youngstown and Akron, where the final stop will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday outside the Summit County Jail, 205 E. Crosier St.

Cincinnati Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld, who is organizing the tour, said the purpose is to urge Gov. John Kasich and the GOP-controlled legislature to restore local government funding that was significantly cut under the last state budget.

"The Kasich tax raid has hurt real people -- in every township, city and county in Ohio," Sittenfeld said in a news release.

Akron veteran testifes to U.S. Senate committee

An Akron veteran testified Wednesday during a Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee about the importance of providing veterans with the resources they need.

Larry Moore, a Vietnam Veteran who served in the U.S. Navy Seabees, spoke at the invitation of U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown.

"Ohio's veterans served their country with selflessness and courage. For their sacrifice abroad, they deserve our support at home," Brown said in a press release.

Moore is the legislative chairman of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Ohio and Summit County's Veterans Service Officer.

Veterans issue to be topic at Portage County TEA Party meeting

The Portage County TEA Party will discuss the scandal involving the treatment of veterans in federally funded facilities in Arizona and other states at its monthly meeting.

Jeremiah Martin, the Northeast Ohio Coordinator for Concerned Veterans for America, will discuss the ongoing issues with the services provided by the Veterans Administration (VA). He will detail what citizens can do to urge Congress to take action to protect veterans. Congress is considering a bill that would give VA administrators the authority to make needed changes.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Maplewood Career Center, 7075 state Route 88 in Ravenna. It is open to the public and refreshments will be provided.

Town hall meeting on gay marriage to be held in Akron Tuesday

A town hall meeting on gay marriage will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Vernon Odom Library Branch, 600 Vernon Odom Blvd.

The event is sponsored by Why Marriage Matters Ohio, which is trying to build support for marriage equality and is holding town hall meetings across the state.

"Many Ohioans have strong opinions on the subject," Campaign Manager Michael Premo said in a news release. "At times, the discussion can become lively, even heated. We believe this type of public exchange is not only healthy, but is necessary to win the hearts and minds of those who at some point will be asked to vote on the issue."

An effort is underway to get a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would permit same-sex marriage in Ohio, reversing a ban approved by voters in 2004.

FitzGerald to speak at Akron Press Club next week

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, the Democratic candidate for governor, will return to Akron next week for another event.

FitzGerald will speak at the Akron Press Club at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at Quaker Station, 135 S. Broadway. The event is co-sponsored by the University of Akron's Bliss Institute of Applied Politics.

FitzGerald has spoken in Akron twice in recent months, once at a union hall on the day Gov. John Kasich was delivering his State of the State address in nearby Medina, and more recently at a Summit County Progressive Democrats dinner May 2.

A Quinnipiac University poll released today showed Kasich with a 50-35 lead over FitzGerald.

Santorum to visit Akron on book tour

Rick Santorum, a former Republican presidential candidate, is doing a three-city tour to promote his book Blue Collar Conservatives and one of the stops will be in Akron.

Santorum visited Chicago Wednesday, will be in Columbus Thursday and will travel to Akron Friday. His local stop will be at noon at the DoubleTree Akron/Fairlawn, 3150 W. Market St. He will attend an Ohio Christian Alliance luncheon and answer questions from attendees.

Santorum, a former U.S. senator, is chairman of Patriot Voices, a non-profit organization. He made two stops in the Akron area during the last presidential primary.

Legalize Democracy film to be screened

The film Legalize Democracy will be shown at 7 p.m. today at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 S. High St.

The film examines the history of the relationship between corporate power, oppression and social movements in the United States. The film was produced by Move to Amend, the national coalition seeking at U.S. constitutional amendment that would establish that only human beings, not corporations, possess inalienable constitutional rights and that political money is not equivalent to political speech.

Hurry if you want to vote early; deadlines fast approaching for May primary

If you plan to vote early for the May 6 primary, you’d better hurry.

In-person early voting will be offered at elections boards until 5 p.m. today, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
