Vigils against gun violence to be held in Akron, Canton

Vigils will be held in Akron and Canton Friday as part of a day of action against gun violence.

Similar events will be held across the country, sponsored by Organizing for Action, a grassroots group affiliated with President Barack Obama's campaign.

Reps encourage grads to apply to for program

Local state representatives are encouraging area college graduates to apply for the Ohio Legislative Service Commission's 13-month Legislative and Telecommunications Program.

The commission will hire more than 20 fellows to work with members of the state legislature in 2014. Duties include assisting with constituent services, doing legislative research, attending meetings and performing administrative duties. Some fellows also assist in televising House and Senate proceedings and preparing educational videos.

Summit County Congressional members try to get help for cities on demolition costs

Two lawmakers who represent part of Summit County are working together to try to help cities pay for the demolition of abandoned and vacant homes.

U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Cleveland, and Rep. Dave Joyce, R-Russell Township, introduced legislation Wednesday that would provide $4 billion for the local issuance of bonds to cover the cost of the demolition of run-down houses. U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, is also a sponsor.

Husted's office to hold office hours across Ohio, including in Northfield

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted's Office will hold regional office hours across the state next week, including in Northfield.

The local hours will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Nordonia Hills library branch, 9458 Olde Eight Road.

Portman to be featured in Millionaire question today

U.S. Sen. Rob Portman will be featured in a Millionaire's Countdown to the Oscars question in an episode airing at 3 p.m. today.

The category will be "action movie tips" and the question is: After a kayaking accident in Chile, Ohio Senator Rob Portman purposely slammed his dislocated shoulder into a rock, a trick he said he learned from what film? The possible answers are: "The Rock," "Lethal Weapon 2," "Die Hard 2" and "Con Air."

Joyce, R-Russell Township, has joined the United Solutions Caucus, a bipartisan group of freshman Congressional members committed to working together to find common ground.

Nurses receive commendations for aiding Akron Marathon runner

State Rep. Anthony DeVitis, R-Akron, recently presented commendations to two local nurses credited with saving a runner's life during the Akron Marathon.

Heather Pariso and Lynne Trenkelbach, who were running in the Sept. 29 marathon, came to the aid of Tony Lindeman when he collapsed. Pariso pumped his heart, while Trenkelbach performed mouth-to-mouth until an ambulance arrived. Paramedics used a defibrilator to restart Lindeman's heart.

Many Congressional members in serious debt, study shows.

It's no secret that many members of Congress are extremely wealthy, but it may not be quite as well known that many of them are seriously in debt.

A new report by the Center for Responsive Politics shows that numerous Congressional members owed between $238.9 million and $568.3 million to creditors, not including home loan mortages. Some have credit card balances of upwards of $100,000.

Lieberth to write book about Akron

When Deputy Mayor Dave Lieberth retired last December after 10 years with the city, he said he wanted to write a book about Akron.

Now, it looks like that's going to happen. The book has sponsors, a title, a publisher and a release date.

FitzGerald to attend Summit County Democratic Party fundraiser

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, who is on the short list to run for governor next year, will be the featured guest at the Summit County Democratic Party's 37th-annual Valentine's Day Fundraiser.

The event will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at Tangier restaurant, 532 W. Market St. It will include hors d'oeuvres, drinks and door prizes.

Joyce to sit next to Democrat during State of the Union speech

Freshman Congressman David Joyce won't be seated among his Republican colleagues during the State of the Union speech next week.

Instead, he plans to sit next to U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, a Democrat from Illinois who also is new to Congress.

Ohio ranks in middle in Pew study looking at state's election performances

Ohio fell squarely in the middle of a new Pew study this week that rated states on how well they performed in the 2008 and 2010 elections.

The study, which looked at such factors as wait times, registration problems and use of online tools, identified the best states as Colorado, Delaware, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Washington and Wisconsin. The worst performers were Alabama, California, Mississippi, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina and West Virginia.

Portage County Tea Party leader no longer heading Ohio Liberty Coalition

The head of the Portage County Tea Party will no longer lead the Ohio Liberty Coalition, an umbrella group made up of 75 tea party and other related groups across the state.

Tom Zawistowski, however, will still serve as executive director of the Portage tea party, one of the most active in Ohio and as president of the "We the People Convention."
