Summit County GOP suggests Tom McCarty for vacancy

Former Judge Tom McCarty is the Summit County Republican Party's top pick to replace a retired Summit County Judge.

The party, which met Wednesday night to choose candidates, selected Barberton Municipal Court Judge Chris Croce and Scott Stevenson, an attorney whose wife is Diana Stevenson, the Barberton court clerk, as its other choices.

A new effort will focus on improving efficiency and collaboration among local governments in Northeast Ohio.

A coalition of Northeast Ohio, including some in Akron and Canton, has hired the Center for Governmental Research (CGR), based in Rochester, N.Y. to help with the effort.

Akron City Council to hold special meeting on proposal to donate steam plant to hospital

Akron City Council will hold a special meeting at noon Friday to discuss a proposal to put an issue on the November ballot donating the city's downtown steam-heating and cooling system to Akron Children's Hospital.

No other items will be discussed at the meeting, which is being held while council is on its summer break.

Civil rights movie to be shown

The movie Brother Outsider about civil rights activist Bayard Rustin will be shown from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21 in meeting rooms 2 A and B of the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 South High St.

The event is free and open to the public.

No slates for Akron at-large Democratic council races, candidates say

Akron at-large Councilwoman Linda Omobien is seeking to distance herself from a fellow council colleague running at large.

When Bruce Kilby, currently the Ward 2 councilman, surprised many in mid-June when he filed petitions to run at large, he said he might run on a slate with current at-large council members Omobien and Mike Williams.

Akron Radio Center to host foodtruck event this Friday

Food trucks are coming to Akron ... at least for a day.

The Akron Radio Center will host a "Food Truck Friday: Radio Roundup" this Friday in the center's parking lot at 1795 W. Market St. in Akron. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and last until the food runs out.

Summit County GOP seeking applicants for Tallmadge at-large council seat

The Summit County Republican Party is accepting applications to fill the vacancy of at-large Tallmadge Councilman Jack Sarver.

Sarver stepped down from his post Aug. 1 and isn't running for re-election in the Sept. 10 primary, ending his 14-year tenure on council.
