Former Akron deputy mayor finishes book on city

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: December 11, 2013

Former Akron deputy mayor Dave Lieberth, who is known as the city’s unofficial historian, has now finished a book on the city’s history.

Mayor Don Plusquellic will announce the release of Inventive. Industrious. Inspired: The Story of Greater Akron at the Greater Akron Chamber’s board of director’s meeting at 8:45 a.m. Thursday in the Firestone Country Club’s new loge. Lieberth, who retired from the city last fall, will autograph books.

Lieberth describes the 190-page book as "the story of how we got where we are today." He said it explains "why we are an exceptional community." The book includes 40 profiles of prominent businesses and organizations, including Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., FirstEnergy Corp, the Akron Zoo and Swenson’s.

Lieberth said the city and local businesses will use the book as an economic development tool to tell Akron’s story. Any proceeds will go to the Summit County Historical Society.

The book is $59.99 or $54 for historical society members. It will be sold by the historical society at Lock 3 and on amazon.com.
