League to hold Copley-Fairlawn school board forum Wednesday

A forum featuring the four candidates for the Copley-Fairlawn Board of Education will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Copley-Fairlawn High School, 3807 Ridgewood Road.

The League of Women Voters of the Akron Area and the Copley-Fairlawn PTA are co-sponsoring the event, which is open to the public. Janice Jacobs, the league’s Education Fund project director, will moderate.

Town hall this evening in Canton will focus on issues African-Americans face in Ohio

A town hall meeting on the state of African-Americans in Ohio will held at 5 p.m. today at Canton City Hall, 218 Cleveland Ave. S.W.

The town hall will be hosted by the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) and Canton City Council members. The event will focus on the complex issues facing blacks in Ohio.

Summit County elections board denies ballot access for 5 independents, certifies others

Five independents hoping to run for seats in the Nov. 5 election were disqualified by the Summit County board of elections because of insufficient signatures on their petitions.

The candidates had hoped to run for Barberton council at-large, Cuyahoga Falls mayor, Cuyahoga Falls council at-large, Akron council Ward 3 and Akron council Ward 10.

Hunger documentary to be shown

The documentary A Place at the Table about addressing hunger in America will be shown Thursday evening at Tallmadge High School, 140 N. Munroe Road.

A reception will begin at 5:15 p.m., with the film show at 6 p.m. and a panel discussion following at 7:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item as their admission, with especially needed items including peanut butter, cereal, canned beef stew, canned vegetables, soup and tuna.

Kasich to speak at Summit County GOP finance dinner

Gov. John Kasich will be the speaker at the Summit County Republican Party's annual finance dinner.

The dinner will be Tuesday, Oct. 1 at the Hilton Akron Fairlawn, 3180 W. Market St. A cocktail reception will be at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

Portage TEA Party meeting to include a reading of the Constitution

You've heard of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. How about reading the Constitution?

That's what the Portage County TEA Party plans to do to celebrate Constitution Day at its monthly meeting Tuesday. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Maplewood Career Center, 7075 state Route 88 in Ravenna.

ALEC Exposed documentarty to be shown

The documentary ALEC Exposed will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Laborers International Union Local 894 Hall, 720 Wolf Ledges in Akron.

The movie focuses on the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), an organization that critics say provides an opportunity for corporations to give state legislators the law changes they desire that benefit them. ALEC, though, describes itself as a non-partisan group of conservative state lawmakers who believe in "limited government, free markets, federalism and individual liberty."

Plusquellic to attend racism session in Birmingham Thursday

Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic will attend a U.S. Conference of Mayors' session on racism and discrimination in Birmingham, Ala. Thursday.

Plusquellic, a past president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM), will moderate a panel discussion on building tolerance.

Renacci opposes military action against Syria

Two Akron-area lawmakers have now said they don't support military action against Syria.

U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci, R-Wadsworth, released a statement with his opposition today. This follows U.S. Rep. Bob Gibbs, R-Lakeville, who said Wednesday that he doesn't think President Barack Obama has made the case for a military strike.
