Local elected officials to hold tour to urge restoration of local government funding

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: May 22, 2014

Local elected officials will hold a two-day, six-city Stop the Local Government Fund Raid Tour that will include a stop in Akron.

The tour is visiting Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo, Cleveland, Youngstown and Akron, where the final stop will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday outside the Summit County Jail, 205 E. Crosier St.

Cincinnati Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld, who is organizing the tour, said the purpose is to urge Gov. John Kasich and the GOP-controlled legislature to restore local government funding that was significantly cut under the last state budget.

"The Kasich tax raid has hurt real people -- in every township, city and county in Ohio," Sittenfeld said in a news release.

At each stop, city, police and fire officials will join elected officials in detailing the impact of the local government reductions in their communities. Summit County Councilwoman Ilene Shapiro will be among the speakers at the Akron stop.
