No slates for Akron at-large Democratic council races, candidates say

Akron at-large Councilwoman Linda Omobien is seeking to distance herself from a fellow council colleague running at large.

When Bruce Kilby, currently the Ward 2 councilman, surprised many in mid-June when he filed petitions to run at large, he said he might run on a slate with current at-large council members Omobien and Mike Williams.

Omobien said Thursday that she isn’t running as part of a slate and will remain solo as she has in previous campaigns.

“I’ve never had any discussion with anyone about a slate,” she said. “I have no plans to run with anyone.”

Kilby confirmed that he supports Omobien, but won’t be collaborating with her for the Sept. 10 primary. He said he will be doing a joint mailer and coordinating on yard sign placement with Williams. Both candidates will also be doing their own campaign literature and events.

Williams could not be reached for comment Thursday.

At-large Councilman Jeff Fusco, who rounds out the four-way race for three seats on the Democratic side, said he also isn’t running with any of the other at-large candidates, though he is coordinating with several ward council candidates.
