Plain Dealer picks Libertarian in Treasurer race

By Doug Published: October 11, 2010

A nasty race for state treasurer between two candidates with questionable qualifications -- Republican Josh Mandel and Democratic incumbent Kevin Boyce -- resulted in the Cleveland Plain Dealer endorsing a 28-year-old Libertarian candidate, the newspaper said Sunday.

In a campaign for Ohio treasurer that produced more light and less mud, Matthew P. Cantrell, the young Libertarian candidate, probably wouldn't get a second look. That would be a mistake -- especially in light of glaring deficiencies that make both major-party candidates unattractive options.

The Plain Dealer said it's not likely that Cantrell can prevail against major party candidates with six figures in their campaign accounts, but said, "it would be a shame if Cantrell were to be squashed like a midge in the general election, simply for the lack of money and a big-party label."
