Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic and Akron Superintendent David James are in Washington, D.C. for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and U.S. Conference of Mayors' Mayors in Education Convening.

As part of Friday's activities, Plusquellic, James and the other participants will spend an hour with Bill Gates, discussing opportunities to champion education by supporting high academic standards and great teachers.

"This is a great opportunity for mayors to share ideas, discover new resources and learn from each other," Plusquellic said in a news release. "I am especially honored to be spending part of my day with Bill Gates."

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation provides grants in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 100 countries. The foundation supports numerous causes, with education being a high priority.

The mayors conference began Thursday evening and runs through Friday.
