Plusquellic to attend racism session in Birmingham Thursday

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: September 11, 2013

Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic will attend a U.S. Conference of Mayors' session on racism and discrimination in Birmingham, Ala. Thursday.

Plusquellic, a past president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM), will moderate a panel discussion on building tolerance.

The mayors event is being held in tandem with Empowerment Week, marking Birmingham's involvement in the civil rights movement of 1963 and the 50th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, which killed four young girls.

USCM will release a 10-point plan to end racism and discrimination and is establishing the U.S. Coalition of Cities Against Racism and Discrimination, a network of cities working together to improve their policies to fight racism, discrimination, xenophobia and exclusion, according to a USCM's press release.

CSPAN plans to cover the event.
