Poll respondents so far say Akron needs a new arena

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: December 30, 2013

The majority of people who have so far responded to an poll think Akron needs a new arena.

Fifty-seven percent of the nearly 800 people who have participated said the city would benefit from a new arena for University of Akron basketball and other events.

Respondents are more conflicted, however, about where it should go, with more picking the University of Akron campus over downtown.

They are clear on one thing, however: They don't want to pay for it. Seventy-one percent say the wouldn't be willing to help pay for the construction of a new arena, such as through a sales tax hike.

The poll will continue through 11:59 p.m. today, so there is still plenty of time to participate.

Readers also can joint a conversation on the Beacon Journal's Facebook page today about the arena issue.

The Beacon Journal will publish the final poll results, along with some of the Facebook comments, in a future story.
