Public hearing to be held on federal spending cuts

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: May 22, 2013

A public hearing on "Saving Our Federal Safety Net" will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1.

The event will be at St. Paul AME Church, 1250 S. Hawkins Ave. in Akron.

Organizers say federal spending cuts to education, food and nutrition, housing, health care, veterans programs, transportation, employment and other social "safety net" programs would impact millions of Americans and thousands in Summit County. They advocate alternative ways to save money, like ending tax cuts to the wealthiest citizens and closing corporate tax loopholes.

Those who attend may share their views and hear from federal and state public officials who have been invited.

The event is sponsored by St. Paul AME Church, Concerned Clergy and Community Leaders, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Barberton-Norton-Wadsworth Peace Group, and the Northeast Ohio American Friends Service Committee.
