Otterman among new Akron Civil Service Commission members
A familiar name has reentered the Akron political scene: Otterman.
John Otterman, a former Akron councilman and state representative, was one of two new members appointed to the Akron Civil Service Commission this week by Akron City Council.

Sykes to hold fishing event
Rep. Vernon Sykes, R-Akron, will host his annual fishing clinic from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Wildlife District 3 Youth Fishing Area, 912 Portage Lakes Drive.
The event is for children ages 7 to 14 who live in the Akron area. It will feature various stations with information fishing, including filleting and cooking, local information/map reading, knot tying, rigging, habitat and handling.

Two more announce retirement from Akron mayor's cabinet
The shuffling continues in Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic's cabinet.
Chief of Staff Rick Merolla and Laraine Duncan, deputy mayor of intergovernmental relations, announced today that they are retiring. This makes three retirements from the mayor's cabinet in the last month, with Ron Williamson earlier announcing plans to step down this summer.

Green native interning in Sen. Brown's office
A Green native is serving as an intern this summer for U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown.
Kyle Zurz, 21, is majoring in international studies at Bowling Green State University. He's interning for Brown while also taking classes at George Mason University.

Tim Ryan to speak at Akron event
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan will speak at the Federated Democratic Women of Summit County’s meeting at noon Saturday at St. George’s Fellowship Centre, 3204 Ridgewood Road.
Light refreshments will be served prior to Ryan’s presentation, which will include a question-an-answer session.

State budget proposal makes exception for Open Meetings Law for tax break talk
A story in the Cincinnati Enquirer this week detailed a provision added to the Senate version of the state budget that would permit a new exception to the Open Meetings Law for government bodies.
The provision would allow government agencies to meet in private to discuss company requests for tax breaks.
