Akron mayor hasn't chosen new chief of staff

With the changes that Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic recently announced for his cabinet, one key spot was noticeably absent: chief of staff.

Asked today if he had an announcement forthcoming for his chief of staff, Plusquellic replied, "No." Asked if he had a timeline for choosing someone for this position, the mayor again said, "No."

Rally to kick off local effort to collect signatures for Ohio Voter Bill of Rights amendment

A rally to kick off  the local effort to collect signatures for the Ohio Voter Bill of Rights will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Second Baptist Church, 690 S. Main St. in Akron.

State Rep. Alicia Reece, president of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus, will speak during the event. Reece, D-Cincinnati, has been pushing for the constitutional amendment that would make voting a fundamental right and set in stone a 35-day early voting period and the current identification standards for voting and permit online voter registration.

Akron students honored for tree slogans

In honor of Arbor Day, Keep Akron Beautiful asked Akron students to create a ten-word slogan to express what the world would be like without trees.

The winning slogan came from students at Harris Elementary School, with "No Trees, no healthy air, please plant trees everywhere."

Tea party to ask for poll observers in May primary

In another sign of the friction in the Republican Party, the tea party announced today that it will ask for poll observers in the May 6 primary.

Tom Zawistowski, executive director of the Portage County TEA Party, said in a news release today that the tea party plans to file requests with county boards of elections to have a representative watch the voting at polling places.

Akron fire union has new president

The Akron fire union has a new president.

Jim Knafel is out and Russ Brode, a vice president with Local 330, is in. The votes were counted Tuesday night, giving Brode the edge over Knafel.

Kaboom plans to run for Akron mayor

Pastor Natural Hunka Kaboom, a regular speaker at Akron City Council meetings, plans to run for Akron mayor next year.

Kaboom, whose plan to run for council in 2013 was cut short when he failed to get enough valid signatures, announced his new political aspirations during the public comment period at Monday night's council meeting.

LaTourette to speak at Akron Press Club

Outspoken former Congressman Steve LaTourette will make his second appearance in the Akron area in less than a month when he speaks at the Akron Press Club Tuesday, April 22.

LaTourette is now a lobbyist in Washington, D.C. and heads Main Street Partnership, a group that supports Congressional members being challenged by tea party candidates. He has recently gained prominence in his new role, including appearances on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Larry King.

Tiberi to speak at Summit County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner

U.S. Rep. Pat Tiberi will speak at the Summit County Republican Party's annual Lincoln Day Dinner this year.

Tiberi is a seven-term Congressman from the Columbus area who took over Gov. John Kasich's Congressional seat. He serves on the powerful Ways and Means Committee.
