Suit challenges Ohio absentee ballot methods

COLUMBUS: Four voters have filed a federal lawsuit challenging the different ways Ohio counties handle mailings of absentee ballot applications and the ballots themselves.

Some counties mail out the applications to all active registered voters, while others don't. Some cover the cost of mailing back a completed application or ballot, while others require the voter to come up with stamps.

The suit filed in Cincinnati this week asks a federal judge to stop counties from mailing out absentee ballots until the state has a uniform policy.

The plaintiffs live in counties that don't automatically send out ballot applications.

A spokesman says Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, the state's top elections official, is reviewing the lawsuit.
