Summit County GOP elections board member may not seek reappointment

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: January 28, 2014

Summit County GOP elections board member Ray Weber is weighing not seeking another appointment to the board.

"I'm thinking I might step down," Weber said this morning after a brief and uneventful elections board meeting.

Weber has until Saturday morning to decide. The Summit County GOP's executive committee will meet at 8:30 a.m. at Portage Country Club, 240 N. Portage Path to pick a board candidate to suggest to Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted. The member's term would begin March 1.

Weber and Wayne Jones, the Democratic Party chairman, are the two members of the four-member Summit elections board whose terms are up this year. The Summit County Democratic Party recently met and recommended that Jones be reappointed to the seat he's held since 1998.

Weber, an attorney, has been on the elections board for four years, seeing the board through some contentious times, including periods when the board had more tie votes than any in Ohio. He served 12 years on the county school board and is now a member of the library board.

"I'm still wrestling with it," he said of his decision about whether to continue on the elections board.
