Tea party to ask for poll observers in May primary

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: April 24, 2014

In another sign of the friction in the Republican Party, the tea party announced today that it will ask for poll observers in the May 6 primary.

Tom Zawistowski, executive director of the Portage County TEA Party, said in a news release today that the tea party plans to file requests with county boards of elections to have a representative watch the voting at polling places.

"It is with deep regret that we feel forced to take this action to defend ourselves from party officials in our own party," Zawistowski said in the release.

The tea party is fielding candidates in the primary for the Republican State Central Committee and in other races across the state, including the 14th Congressional District and the 27th state Senate District.
