Town hall meeting on gay marriage to be held in Akron Tuesday

By Stephanie Warsmith Published: May 16, 2014

A town hall meeting on gay marriage will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Vernon Odom Library Branch, 600 Vernon Odom Blvd.

The event is sponsored by Why Marriage Matters Ohio, which is trying to build support for marriage equality and is holding town hall meetings across the state.

"Many Ohioans have strong opinions on the subject," Campaign Manager Michael Premo said in a news release. "At times, the discussion can become lively, even heated. We believe this type of public exchange is not only healthy, but is necessary to win the hearts and minds of those who at some point will be asked to vote on the issue."

An effort is underway to get a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would permit same-sex marriage in Ohio, reversing a ban approved by voters in 2004.

A Quinnipiac University poll released today showed Ohio voters support gay marriage 50-43. The margin was the same as a February poll by the university.
