Billy Powell, keyboardist for 2006 Rock Hall inductees Lynyrd Skynyrd died Wednesday at his home in Florida according to the Associated Press.
Powell, 56, had a history of heart problems and called 911 himself at about 12:55 A.M. complaining of breathing difficulty. Paramedics were dispatched to his home but were unable to revive him.
The suspected cause of death is a heart attack and no autopsy will be performed.
Powell, who joined the Southern Rock icons in 1972 shortly before their debut album's release survived the 1977 plane crash that killed singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup vocalist and Gaine's sister Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray.
