An "Emo"-tional night at E.J. Thomas Hall

By malcolm Published: April 21, 2009

Wednesday night, The University of Akron's E.J. Thomas Hall will play host to a couple of up and coming bands for whom the adjective "emo" is probably not an insult.
Singer/songwriter Secondhand Serenade aka John Vesely will perform along with The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

Vesely is touring behind his sophomore album A Twist In My Story, a collection of umm..emotional songs featuring the kind of high keening vocals, emotional, vulnerable lyrics and big, hooky choruses that made Dashboard Confessional so darn popular a few years ago.

Dinosaur Jr. at Musica

By malcolm Published: April 9, 2009

Apparently, indie rock bands don't die, they just break up/shed members and do their own thing until the inevitable reunion show/tour where they can make more money in a few months of nostalgia fueled touring than in their initial incarnation (see, Pixies).
The original Dinosaur Jr. lineup didn't break up, they just shed original bassist Lou Barlow who did alright for himself in Sebadoh and wrote one of the one of the best kiss-off songs ever in The Freed Pig .

Wednesday night at Musica, the reconstituted trio of indie rock graybeards took a pleasant and highly amplified trip through their back catalog and songs from their 2007 reunion album Beyond.

Metallica Rock the Rock Hall

By malcolm Published: April 4, 2009

Flea is inducting Metallica and he said the F-Word which as far as I have heard is one of the few naughty words of the evening.
Usually, there are a lot more.

Flea has green hair.
How many other jobs on this planet can a 40+ year old man with green hair wearing a Metallica t-shirt and a blazer be taken seriously.
Hell Yeah!
Flea just referenced Anasthesia (Pulling Teeth) and he is giving the late bassist Cliff Burton a lot of deserved love and James Hetfield looks a little misty.

Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page are rockin....I think..

By malcolm Published: April 4, 2009

It's Jeff Beck's turn and unsurpsiringly, they started with the old clip of him saying a freindly "F-Em" to his former Yardbird members because "they fired me, they did! So F-Em"
I'll bet something he says tonight will end up in future montages.

Hey look! It's Max Weinberg at Gary Tallent!

Wanda Jackson is still rockin' & Spooner Oldham

By malcolm Published: April 4, 2009

OK, So Rosanne Cash came back to talk to us about Wanda Jackson and her upcoming album (to be fair she was asked about the album) and now that the auditorium audio is back on, I have no idea what the hell Paul Shaffer is talking about, but here comes SPOONER OLDHAM onstage so I guess it's his turn.
Spooner got in and out pretty quickly, did Paul Shaffer and the band play one of his songs?

Oh Well, here comes Bobby Womack. His opening montage features several time warp clips of him on Soul Train (you can tell what era is by the length of Don Cornelius's afro) including one of him saying "I'm from Cleveland, Ohio,""
It seems like the producers are doing their best to show Cleveland some on-air love.

James Ingram & Howard Hewett concert canceled

By malcolm Published: April 1, 2009

The April 11 concert featuring Akron born R&B/soul singers James Ingram and Howard Hewett to be held at the Akron Civic Theatre has been canceled due slow ticket sales.

The Easter themed concert was timed to coincide with Ingram's latest CD a gospel collection called Stand (In The Light) and was going to be a combination homecoming for the pair of soul men and an opportunity a local church choir to sing with the artist.
