One word describes the difference between the Indians and the Tigers: Ace
Justin Verlander gives the Tigers something the Indians don't have. To be fair, most teams in baseball don't have a Verlander.
When the Indians had their big lead in the Central, I thought the cushion would hide their lack of an ace. But injuries and errors, helped erase that lead in a hurry.
The Indians will hang around the Tigers at the top of the division, mainly because the Twins and Royals are very beatable.
But most of this gets back to pitching. The Indians need Fausto Carmona to be on his game every time out. He was OK last night but still, during the broadcast, Orel Hershiser did a great job of showing just how inconsistent Carmona's delivery is.
The season has been a surprise, but if the Indians can't magically pull an ace from their sleeve, don't expect a treat at the end.
Here are the highlights of Ohio.com this morning.
The Giants finished off a sweep of the Indians 3-1. Sheldon Ocker breaks down the options if the Indians are looking to make a trade to replace Shin-Soo Choo in the lineup. This just doesn't seem likely to me. Here are more notes.
I always enjoy the College World Series. It championship round gets under way tonight with Florida vs. South Carolina.
Also I wanted to add, be patient with the site this week. We are switching over to a new computer system at the Beacon Journal. And it affects everything we do. In the end, it will allow a lot more instant control over the website. Some of the changes have been under way online for a few weeks, but the big change is today when the newsroom switches over.
Good day, Ron
