Why is the number 39 so important in baseball?

By Ron Ledgard Published: February 13, 2013

Sports Illustrated writer Joe Lemire and pitching guru Rick Peterson, now of the Baltimore Orioles, discuss why once a team allows its opponent to get more than 39 batters to the plate in a game the chances of winning dimnish.

Basically it means once the No. 3 hitter gets to the plate for a fifth time his team is more than likely going to win.

Lemire breaks it down in this article on SI.com.
