Barley’s Smokehouse in Columbus will celebrate its 15th anniversary next month (August) with a weeklong celebration.
“When we started talking about our 15th anniversary, we knew that we wanted to do something memorable,” co-owner Lenny Kolada said in an email. “That led to two goals for us: Upgrade our brewpub to make our guest experience better, and also to throw a kick-ass party.”
The brewpub will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday (July 30 and 31) as the improvements are done. The renovations involve more than just painting and sprucing up.
The Smokehouse wanted to create a better environment for groups of 10, 15, 20 or more people.
“Our solution is to install community tables at bar height, adjacent to our existing bar,” Kolada said. “Conversation at any bar is optimal for no more than three people, maybe five if the two people standing behind them are included. By installing community tables, we’re able to create conversation zones for up to 20 people. We’re also replacing our bar stools with ones that swivel. We think this is going to be an awesome environment and we’re really excited to get this done.”
The community tables will be made of two-inch thick locally-sourced white oak slabs. The finish will be a toasted oak, harkening to the look and finish of bourbon barrels.
"In addition, we’re replacing our draft towers for better visibility of what craft beers are being served," Kolada added. "They’re imported from Italy and are pretty sexy. We’ve also removed two billiards table and will be replacing the area with more booths. The rationale here is to reduce waiting times at the door."
The brewpub will reopen Thursday (Aug. 1) and that’s when the pre-party begins. The brewery will tap several limited beers through the week, affectionately called the "Smokehouse Rarity Series."
Barley’s Smokehouse also will tap its newest beer — Sexy Sadie (Sixty Season) Saison — on its actual anniversary, Aug. 7. "It’s an effervescent straw-colored saison that includes fresh ginger, cracked coriander, fresh crack black peppercorns and lemongrass," Kolada said. "(It’s Sixty Season because fifteen years times four seasons is, well you probably figured that out without me telling you.)"
