Bill Metzger, publisher of the Great Lakes Brewing News and other beer publications, will be the featured speaker at the eighth annual Ohio Brew Week. The event is June 21-29 in Athens.
This year, there are more than 40 Ohio craft breweries participating with more than 200 Ohio-made beers available, said Dan Gates, executive director of the event. “Ohio Brew Week continues to grow in stature around the country and among the craft brew industry,” Gates said in a prepared statement. “We are fortunate that the Athens community embraces this excellent event and welcomes more than 20,000 people from all over the country.”
Ohio Brew Week is planning several events prior to the week-long celebration. Organizers are in the process now of selecting a Ms. OBW Ambassador. The winner will assist with events and be a spokeswoman and welcome guests. The Ohio Brew Week board will award the winner a $200 scholarship. Candidates must submit a short essay about her qualifications and be 21 or older. They also must attend a preliminary interview from 6 to 8 p.m. March 21 at the Hampton Inn, 986 E. State St. The interviews will be conducted by Ohio Brew Week board and staff members.
Five candidates will be chosen to attend a grand opening event at Kiser’s Bar-B-Q Enterprises on April 13. Kiser’s will be celebrating the opening of a new restaurant. Those final five candidates will read a short essay “Why I would make a great Ohio Brew Week Ambassador.”
Ohio Brew Week also is seeking to name the ending event, now called Craft Brews on the Block. A contest is running to name the event. Enter at firstname.lastname@example.org.
