Great Lakes Brewing Co. slipped one spot in the Brewers Association’s annual list of the top 50 craft beer companies in the U.S. The nonprofit association, a Boulder, Colo.-based trade group, released its lists Wednesday of the top craft and overall brewing companies based on 2012 sales volume.
Great Lakes, from Cleveland, fell from 18th to 19th among the crafts. New Glarus Brewing Co. from New Glarus, Wisc., jumped over Great Lakes.
Great Lakes also is the 28th largest brewery overall in the country, falling one spot from 27th last year. It is the only Ohio-owned craft brewery to make the list.
The top five craft breweries remained unchanged from a year ago.
Boston Beer Co., which has a Samuel Adams brewery in Cincinnati, topped the list. The rest of the top five were: Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, the Gambrinus Co. and Deschutes.
CraftWorks Restaurants and Breweries, which operates the Rock Bottom and Gordon Biersch brewpubs in Ohio, ranked 28th. BJ’s Restaurants, which has restaurants in Columbus and Cincinnati and is opening one in Dayton, was ranked 40th.
The association also released its list of the top 50 overall brewers in the country. Anheuser-Busch was first, followed by MillerCoors, Pabst, D.G. Yuengling & Son and Boston Beer. Both Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors have breweries in Ohio.
Of the top 50 overall brewing companies, 39 are small and independent craft brewing companies, the association said.
"In 2012, craft surpassed 6 percent of the total U.S. beer market, with volume and dollar sales reaching record levels," association Director Paul Gatza said in a prepared release. "Increasingly, beer lovers are turning to craft brewed beer from small and independent producers to satisfy their thirst for bold, innovative and flavor-forward beers."
