The Brewers Association, a Boulder, Colo.-based trade group, released its annual list of the top 50 U.S. craft breweries.
Boston Beer Co., which has a Samuel Adams brewery in Cincinnati, topped the list, which is based on 2011 sales volume. The rest of the top five were: Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, The Gambrinus Co. and Deschutes.
Great Lakes Brewing is ranked 18th and is the only Ohio-owned brewer on the list. Great Lakes was ranked 22nd last year.
"In the last 15 years, craft brewing has gone from 1 percent of the overall beer market to almost 6 percent in 2011," Brewers Association Director Paul Gatza said in a prepared statement. "We attribute a large part of that growth to the many talented brewers who are providing beer lovers with more beer style and flavor choices than ever before."
The association also released its list of the top 50 overall brewers in the U.S. Anheuser-Busch was first, followed by MillerCoors, Pabst, Yuengling and Boston Beer. Both Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors have breweries in Ohio.
