Cleveland Brew Shop to start hop farm
The Cleveland Brew Shop is partnering with the Tremont West Development Corp. and Ohio Department of Transportation to convert a vacant city lot into a small-scale hop farm.
The corporation recently approached the homebrew shop about using an undeveloped piece of land along W. 14th St. just south of the Interstate 490 bridge in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood.
Shop owner Paul Benner said he expects to construct a hop trellis and plant about 20 individual plants this spring. He’s still deciding which hop varieties to grow. But it’ll likely be Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and one other, he said.
The fresh hops will be sold through the shop to local homebrewers and breweries.
Volunteers are welcome to help build the trellis. Anyone interested can contact Benner on Facebook or Twitter, or email him at unite@clevelandbrewshop.com.
