Mike Troy wants to be the go-to beer store for Columbus. The former commercial pilot for a cargo company is launching Crafted Drafts this month (September), a store that will carry 600 beer brands along with other supplies such as glassware.
The store, located at 5245 Hamilton Road in northeast Columbus, also will offer 200 to 400 single bottles so shoppers can create their own six-packs.
"This is something I’d rather be doing than flying around," said Troy, who worked as a pilot for 11 years but was put on furlough. "I thought it was about time for a change and being that I like drinking beer and talking about beer, I thought this would be a good fit."
He also recognized a need in Columbus for a great retail shop devoted to beer.
"There’s nothing like it in Columbus," Troy said. "While I can get good beers, I have to ping-pong all over the city to get them."
Cheryl Harrison, who runs the website Drink Up Columbus, agreed.
"There’s a new bar or brewery opening every day it seems, but what Columbus has lacked is a really great beer retail shop," she said in an email.
The store will feature two large coolers and a section devoted to Ohio brews. Although the word "Drafts" is in the name, Crafted Drafts won’t offer draft beer — perhaps down the road, said Troy, who lives in Etna Township.
An official opening date hasn't been selected. Initially Crafted Drafts will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Sunday hours are planned in the future.
