Deschutes Brewery is bringing its Base Camp for Beer Fanatics to Columbus for a weeklong celebration featuring tastings, parties and a visit by “Woody,” the brewery’s mobile bar and mascot. The activities run from Aug. 25 to Aug. 31.
“Columbus is a new market for us,” said Joey Pleich, field marketing manager for the Oregon brewery. “We just launched our brands out there a matter of months ago. So the idea was to come and support that launch. This is a chance for people see a little bit more about who we are and what we do. We’re going to be bringing out some different varieties of beers that we do, some different pub beers that we make ... We introduce our culture through interactive events.”
Deschutes has been conducting its Base Camp for Beer program for four years. The Columbus visit is part of an eight-city tour this year. The craft brewer, the sixth largest in the U.S., has already hit Los Angeles, San Diego, Kansas City, Boise, Idaho, and Duluth, Minn.
As for Woody, it’s a 25-foot-long barrel on wheels that opens up on both sides. Inside, it’s a fully operational bar with eight tap handles and a sound system. This will mark Woody’s first visit to the Buckeye State.
“It’s really our mascot, if you will,” Pleich said.
One of the highlights for the week, he said, is the “Brew-lander: Flicks & Fashion” show at Studio 35 Cinema & Drafthouse on Sunday. Deschutes will pair a fashion show featuring some custom attire made out of brewery packaging with a screening of the film Zoolander.
“It’s going to be an eccentric, weird event but it should be a blast,” Pleich said. “All of the events during the week are going to be a lot of fun but that one is going to be one of those that I’m really interested to see how it shakes out. We’ve never really done it before.”
Deschutes has teamed up with Yay Bikes!, a Columbus nonprofit, for the week. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the organization.
Pleich said Ohio has embraced Deschutes since it entered the state earlier this year. The award-winning Black Butte Porter is leading sales here, he said.
