Fat Head's Brewery & Saloon in North Olmsted will hand out 50 potted hop plants for free Monday as part of a beer experiment.
The brewpub is asking people to raise the hops that will be used to wet-hop a new India pale ale called Hopportunity Knocks. Fat Head's will provide instructions on how to care for the plants. Later this year, the brewpub will ask people to harvest the plants and bring the fresh flowers in to be used to make the beer.
The "hop farmers" will get an exclusive invitation to taste the brew when it's ready. Brewer Matt Cole said the brewpub would like to do a similar beer each year.
The plants will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis starting at 4 p.m. Some people have already signed up on a registration list, Cole said.
"Hopefully we'll get some people who really want to do it because they are excited about growing hops and not just excited for a free plant," he said.
