Lager Heads Smokehouse was always known as a great barbecue joint in Medina County, but it wasn't until mid 2010 that owners and brothers Matt and Jon Kiene decided to add a brewery. At first, the beer was just available on draft at the brewpub. But last year Lager Heads Brewing began distributing in 22-ounce bottles. The brewery also has plans to add 12-ounce bottles.
Question: Lager Heads started out as a barbecue restaurant in 2004 and didn’t add the brewery until years later. Why did you decide to get into brewing your own beer?
Answer: My brother Jon and I always loved craft beer, and it sold very well at the restaurant. So adding the brewery seemed like a great fit, and we were fortunate to meet Steve Bagley who developed all of our beer.
Q: In your relatively short time as a brewery owner – a year and a half -- what have you learned about the brewing industry that you didn’t know before?
A: How expensive stainless steel is!
Q: What are your goals as a brewery?
A: The goal for this year is to expand into distribution of the entire state of Ohio. We are currently in Northeast Ohio, and just recently started selling into the Columbus market.
Q: What’s your favorite beer that you brew and why?
A: That’s tough ... It really depends what kind of mood I'm in. However, we just brewed our Belgian-style Abbeyville Trippel, and that is certainly in my top three.
Q: Which beer – any beer in the world – do you wish that you created/invented/brewed and why?
