Great Lakes brews beer for West Side Market gala
Great Lakes Brewing Co. has made a special beer to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the West Side Market, a Cleveland landmark and attraction located across the street from the brewery. Called Butcher's Brew, it's a Kulmbacher-style lager.
The brewery describes it as having "lightly roasted malt character and subtle hop aromas ... Brewers note that this style would have been popular during the market's early years, and it speaks to the city's ethnic heritage."
Butcher's Brew -- available only to guests at the market's Centennial Gala on Saturday -- comes in a 22-ounce bottle and features label artwork by Christine Wisnieski. The artwork depicts an ox. Because Great Lakes uses 12-ounce bottles, Butcher's Brew was hand bottled.
"Having been neighbors and buyers of various foods from West Side Market for four years as well as serving as a favorite watering hole for thirsty workers and patrons of the market, it just seemed right that we help the neighborhood and city toast to another 100 years of success of this nationally recognized institution," Great Lakes co-owner Pat Conway said in a prepared statement.
