Great Lakes Brewing Co., which prides itself on being a positive environmental steward in the community, has donated 50-gallon drums that are being turned into colorful rain barrels in Green. Some of the barrels have been hand-painted by local residents and went on sale today (March 4) in a silent auction.
Sixteen barrels, featuring motifs from peacocks to meadowlarks and garden and underwater themes, are being sold. Bids for the barrels — which retail for $80 and up at home and garden centers —start at $50. Bidding is taking place in council chambers at the Central Administration Building in Green and ends March 15, when the city will hold its third annual rain barrel workshop.
“Our previous rain barrel workshops have been so well received by our residents, we thought [an] art contest would allow people to add art and design into their landscapes while preserving water quality,” organizer Chrissy Lingenfelter told the Akron Beacon Journal.
