Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Cleveland broke its silence Thursday regarding the future of its new seasonal brew Alchemy Hour Double IPA. As reported here last week, Great Lakes ran into a trademark issue with Widmer Brothers Brewing Co., which owns the Alchemy name and advised Great Lakes not to use it again in the future. At the time, Great Lakes declined to comment.
But the brewery issued a lengthy statement on its website Thursday acknowledging that the Alchemy Hour name -- which paid tribute to a surfing term -- won't return next year. The actual beer, with the same recipe, will be back, though, just with a different name.
"Everything that you experienced with our Alchemy Hour Double IPA this year will be the same in 2014," the brewery said. "The only thing changing will be two words: Alchemy Hour. We remain committed to honoring our local surf community, so expect the same product and packaging with an altered name."
