Hoppin' Frog creates hoppy black ale
Hoppin' Frog Brewery owner and brewer Fred Karm was fascinated when he started seeing black India pale ales. The new style features really hoppy black beers.
But Karm, known for making bold and flavorful brews in 22-ounce bottles, wasn't quite satisfied with some that he sampled. "We wanted more hops," Karm said. "That's what Hoppin' Frog is."
So he and his brewers got to work creating Hop Heathen Imperial Black Ale, which is 8.8 percent alcohol by volume. The beer contains an "uncivilized amount of hop spiciness," Karm said.
Hop Heathen will be released at the Akron brewery from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; and noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $8.99 a bottle. The beer also will be available in retail stores.
