JAFB Wooster Brewery took home the Best of Show honors Saturday at the annual Fat Head's Celebration of the Hop IPA festival. JAF IPA won the judged IPA category and then bested Columbus Brewing's Creeper, which won in the double IPA category. Creeper also won People's Choice.
JAFB, located in Wooster, recently celebrated its first anniversary and this was the first time it participated in the Celebration of the Hop.
"I didn't expect that at all," owner and brewer Paul Fryman said afterward, while holding a heavyweight belt traditionally given to the winner. "I'm excited. Personally I feel some of the best IPAs are brewed right here in Ohio so to win the Best of Show is something else."
The competition took place at Fat Head's Brewery & Saloon in North Olmsted and included The Brew Kettle, Great Lakes, Rhinegeist, Willoughby, Three Floyds, Penn, Cellar Rats and others. Fat Head's wasn't eligible for the competition. Last year, Willoughby Brewing's Cosmic IPA won Best of Show. The Brew Kettle's White Rajah won the previous two years.
