Millersburg Brewing Co., a production brewery and tasting room in the heart of Ohio Amish country, is expanding its distribution in central and southern Ohio.
The brewery has inked deals with 17th Star Distributing in Columbus and Matesich Distributing in Newark to grow its footprint in those regions. Millersburg has been available on draft at select locations in Columbus through self-distribution, but the new agreements will make the beer more widely available.
Millersburg is especially excited about entering the Cincinnati and Dayton markets for the first time, owner Bill Baker said today (Feb. 20). The brewery will continue to self-distribute in northern Ohio.
“I like where we’re headed,” Baker said. “The basic fact is our beer is good and none of this would happen if the beer was marginal. The taste buds out there are too good and there’s too much competition.”
Since opening in May 2013, Millersburg has expanded its operation twice with new fermenters. The brewery operates with a 10-barrel brewhouse. Baker said there are plans to add even more fermenters to keep up with the growing demand and there’s even a possibility of upgrading to a larger brewing system.
He said he’d like to double production in the next year.
Millersburg hasn’t been content with selling in its own backyard or waiting for tourists to visit. It has been aggressive in marketing its brand throughout the state. The brewery has appeared at nearly every major beer festival in Ohio.
“This has been fun,” Baker said. “Our mission statement remains the same. F--- Sam Adams. If they can do it, we can do it.”
Millersburg offers 13 year-round beers, in addition to seasonals. The flagship is Killbuck Creek Kolsch Ale, but French Ridge IPA, Lot 21 Blonde and Panther Hollow Vanilla Porter are major sellers, Baker said. The brewery also is working on an imperial IPA.
The newest beer, Buckhorn Maibock, will be released Tuesday (Feb. 25). The name is a nod to the nearby Lake Buckhorn, which was built in 1967 as a private 220-acre lake.
“The locals use the lake to water ski, fish, swim, picnic and of course party on all occasions,” the brewery said in a news release. “Many of the locals have secrets of parties gone by at houses and beaches of Lake Buckhorn. This brewery owner is no exception.”
Buckhorn Maibock is a golden lager made with a little German smoked malt and German Noble hops. It is 7.5 percent alcohol by volume.
