Jeff Berghoff of Stow won the top prize Friday night (Nov. 1) in West Point Market's second annual Bottle My Brew Ohio Homebrew Challenge. He made a saison with mosaic hops called "Mosaic Saison."
"I'm completely surprised," he said shortly after accepting the award during a beer tasting at the Akron grocery store. Berghoff has been homebrewing for about eight years.
Berghoff received $1,000 and will have his beer made and distributed by Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. next year. He said he's excited to get the chance to brew his beer at Thirsty Dog.
Thirsty Dog co-owner John Najeway praised all the entries and said the final three were particularly outstanding, making it difficult to select a top winner. The second-place award -- and $500 -- went to Craig Chopak of Medina for his Bluesberry Honey Creme Ale. Michael Martini of Lakewood received the third-place prize of $250 for his Session Pale Ale.
More than 90 beers were submitted in the competition, which involved picking the best brews without a concern for style.
