Ohio craft breweries are well-represented in the seventh annual National IPA Competition and the second annual National Imperial IPA Competition. The contests, sponsored by The Brewing News, get under way Saturday (Feb. 15).
The Brew Kettle (White Rajah), Fat Head's Brewery (Head Hunter and IBUsive), Hoppin' Frog Brewery (Hoppin' to Heaven IPA), Nano Brew Cleveland (Citramax) and Willoughby Brewing (Moondance IPA) are participating in the IPA event, which features 128 beers.
Meanwhile, there are 96 beers entered in the Imperial IPA contest, including The Brew Kettle Old 21 and El Lupulo Libre, Fat Head's Hop JuJu, Great Lakes Brewing Chillwave Double IPA, Hoppin' Frog Hop Dam Triple IPA, Market Garden Brewery Cennential Extra IPA and Portside Distillery Man O' War.
The competitions work like the NCAA basketball tournament, with beers going against each other head to head until there is only one left standing. The winners will be declared March 17.
Last year's winners were: Barley Brown's Pallet Jack IPA and Laurelwood Brewing's Megafauna.
