The Cincinnati blog Queen City Fresh is studying how Cincinnati breweries stack up against each other on social media. The website ranked the breweries by their Facebook likes and Twitter followers.
The results are fascinating. MadTree Brewing Co. and Rhinegeist Brewing Co. -- which both opened this year -- are leading the Facebook likes, outpacing more established breweries and those with bigger distribution footprints. MadTree had 5,607 and Rhinegeist had 5,034.
Christian Moerlein was tops in Twitter followers with 3,598, nearly double second-place MadTree (1,992).
"I would caution anyone to make any connection that the # of Facebook likes or Twitter followers correlates to the quality of the beer, sales volume or any other meaningful statistic," Chris Stevens wrote.
He said he's going to keep tracking the results monthly. It's such an interesting experiment -- again, it doesn't say anything about the beer itself -- that when I get a chance I'll try to do the same for all Ohio craft breweries. An educated guess would suggest that Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Cleveland -- because of its 25 years in business and loyal fan base -- would lead the state. Of course, that's not counting Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors or Boston Beer, which have breweries in the state.
