RateBeer has started releasing its annual Best Awards, with a new Ohio brewery already snagging a major award.
Rhinegeist Brewery in Cincinnati was selected as the seventh best new brewery in the world. It's quite an accomplishment, considering there were more than 2,600 new breweries that qualified.
Rhinegeist couldn't be reached for comment.
"Based in Cincinnati’s recently revitalized Over-the-Rhine district, Rhinegeist is led by head brewer Jim Matt (who previously served as quality manager over at Sun King)," the RateBeer website says. "The brewery has found success with fresh, self-distributed, dry-hopped goodness like Truth and Spikelet."
RateBeer also has announced state-by-state bests. Here's a breakdown of Ohio:
-- Best brewery: Hoppin' Frog Brewery in Akron.
-- Best new brewery: Rhinegeist.
-- Best brewpub: Jackie O's in Athens.
-- Best beer: Hoppin' Frog DORIS the Destroyer.
-- Best restaurant: Chappys Tap Room and Grille in Moraine.
-- Best brewery taproom: Hoppin' Frog.
-- Best bottle shop: Lizardville in Bedford Heights.
-- Best grocery: Jungle Jim's in Fairfield. (Jungle Jim's also was cited as one of the best groceries in the world to get a beer.)
-- Best bar: Brews Cafe in Granville.
RateBeer bases its awards on millions of reviews completed online by beer drinkers. No Ohio beers made the list of the Top Beers in the World, which was released today (Feb. 3).
The website will release the list of top brewers in the world on Friday. Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Cleveland, Hoppin' Frog and Jackie O's have routinely been ranked among the top 100 breweries in the world.
