Daniel Mueller has traveled all over the world. A self-described Navy brat born in Puerto Rico, he’s spent the last 15 years in the military.
His service has included time with the Army and Ohio Army National Guard. Mueller is now ready to turn his homebrewing hobby into a career.
Mueller, 39, and his wife Hillary, 36, plan to open Scenic Brewing Co., a seven-barrel production brewery and tasting room, in Stark County in December. The Muellers are finalizing a lease now, with plans to be in Jackson Township, a Canton and Akron suburb.
They also have launched a Kickstarter campaign, hoping to raise $10,000 for their venture. As of Friday morning, $1,225 had been pledged.
“Hillary ... and I have traveled to a lot of different places and discovered lot of great breweries, sites and people, and we want to share those memories through our beers,” said Mueller, who has spent time deployed in Afghanistan.
Scenic will be the third brewery in Stark County. The Meniru Meadery started offering craft beer last year. And Maize Valley Market and Winery in Marlboro Township has announced plans to add a brewery around Labor Day. Spider Monkey Brewing Co., now a contract brewery, also has said it's looking at opening a brewery in either the North Canton area or Kent.
Scenic wants to offer six beers, including seasonal and rotating brews. The plan is to offer draft beer only to start. Scenic also will distribute to bars and restaurants. But three of the beers will be exclusive to the tasting room.
As for what those six beers will be, Mueller said it depends on what local craft beer drinkers want. The brewery website allows people to weigh in on potential beer styles. People can select three styles and include a description about why that beer is so special to them.
“I make everything,” Mueller said.
He mentioned a smoked Irish red ale, India pale ale and pale ale, but stressed that the community will help decide the beers. Daniel and Hillary Mueller, who live in North Canton, are invested in Stark County. He is a graduate of Glen Oak High School and she is a graduate of Central Catholic. Hillary Mueller also is a teacher at Glen Oak.
“I want the community to be part of this,” he said.
